Town manager John Gregory spoke to his club’s official website after his side’s 0-0 League One draw against Carlisle at the Checkatrade.com Stadium, Gregory saying the Red Devils should have won the match comfortably:
“It was actually quite an exciting game for a 0-0, but I wrote on the board 6-0 when I came in, that is what the score should have been, and I have said that once or twice already this season. I find myself repeating it again tonight but there were golden opportunities to have secured a comfortable victory.
“But, we didn’t and in the end obviously Carlisle were throwing everything at us, which did make it an entertaining game because they had to win tonight. They go to Wolves at the weekend which is almost an impossible task for them and hope that results go the right way so they might be able to stay up.
“So, they threw everything at us and we dealt with it fantastically well, if there was one thing to come from the game it was that we got a clean sheet. Paul Jones played well and may back four also played particularly well, but just in front of them Dannie Bulman and Sergio Torres covered an enormous amount of ground and worked exceptionally hard. Sergio has come off with a few cuts and bruises but I am sure he will be ready for the weekend.
“We have had 20 matches in 67 days now, it has been an amazing accomplishment really from these boys and you look at most of the ones that played tonight and they have played almost every minute of every game. It has been a hard task but I would have liked to have won tonight and improved our league position, but we got something from it.
“I have not drawn too many games since I have been here, so at the end I was delighted with the positive side of it that we got a clean sheet from the game. I am sure we will have a good turnout for our final game on Saturday, it was a good gate again tonight considering, 3,200 is a good home attendance for us for the visit of Carlisle and I thought their supporters were fantastic, the Carlisle fans.
“I have certainly been won over by how many of them actually turned up tonight, and it is a rearranged game, I think they all came down last time as well and had to turn around and go home. I have just been speaking to the staff at Carlisle and they are expecting to get home at about four or five o’clock tomorrow morning. They face this every away match but their fans were brilliant tonight and I hope we see them back in League One in a couple of years time.
“There will be a bit of pride at stake against Bristol City on Saturday, and not much more than that. Obviously, we are playing for the three points, we want the three points and hopefully just finish I think as high as tenth, which will be a good achievement by my staff. They have worked endlessly this season, a really, really tough game again tonight, but we will wash them all down over the next 24 hours and get them ready for Saturday.”
Meanwhile Town’s left-sided defender Joe Allen told his club’s official website:
“After the two defeats we didn’t want to lose three in a row again, like the last time we lost six in a row. We knew Carlisle would be coming here fighting for their lives, but I think we did well. We kept them out, they threw everything at us and it was a good point in the end. I thought they did well in the first-half, if they had played like that all season then maybe they wouldn’t be in the relegation zone, but it is just a bit too late for them it looks like.
“But, we had chances in the second-half and should have won the game, but obviously we only got the draw. We have struggled all season to finish teams off and so we have missed out on getting three points when we should have come away with them. But, it was just one of those, their goalkeeper [Jordan Pickford] had a good game, I thought he was a good keeper tonight.”
