Gillingham manager Peter Taylor spoke to BBC Radio Kent after his side's 2-1 League One win over Carlisle at Brunton Park, Taylor saying it was an important to place to come and get three points:

“It was a very important win, I think Carlisle are like ourselves, near enough the same position, so it was an important place to come and get a point or three. It’s fantastic that we got three, some of our football was very good and our togetherness second-half was excellent. We had a really good chat at lunchtime before the pre-match and we spoke about the importance of getting some away wins.

“I didn’t want the players looking at certain teams that are below us, or with us, at home just thinking they are going to be home wins or they are going to be the ones where we are going to try to get home wins. I felt as though we needed to get some away wins somewhere and this was the perfect start and place to get it and they have done well. But, I think they all felt that it was a decent meeting.

“It was a very good finish from Joe Pigott for his goal and I thought some of his hold-up play was good as well, so I am delighted for him and I am sure he is pleased. He has come here to us on loan to get some good match experience and we know he is good finisher and I think he showed us everything about him in that goal.

“I liked the way that Cody McDonald took his goal, he worked his socks off all afternoon, he had to do a lot of chasing second-half and he was fantastic. For him to get that opportunity, I think Carlisle were very nervous about him, he is in good form so centre-halves are always going to be wary of him, but he took it great."

“I think what did Leon Legge for the own goal was that it was an early ball. I am not over the moon about it but I will have another look at it. I just think that it was an early ball and I think maybe he could have adjusted his position had it not come over so early. He was always running towards his own goal so it was a little bit of a problem, what do you do, do you leave it, if you leave it then it goes to somebody.

“So, you have to head it and to be fair to Leon he has headed most things all afternoon, and he headed that one as well but unfortunately into our net. We think it was a penalty as well when Cody was pulled down by the goalkeeper [Jordan Pickford]. To be fair to their manager Graham Kavanagh he thought their goalie pushed the ball away, but it looked a penalty to me from where I was. But, I thought that the officials had a decent game to be fair.

“Jake Hessenthaler is a fantastic young midfield player that we know is going to be a great player for us, but we brought Amine Linganzi in who is a different type. I think he used his strength today, broke a lot of things up and won a lot of headers, so he was important for us. But, I think Jake is going to be a very good player for us, he is an outstanding player and I am sure he is going to get lots of good match experience here.

“He is going to get enough appearances and he will get better and better and he has got a great attitude. So, he is going to be a good player for us and for the fans to watch, there is no doubt about that. Absolutely fantastic to have nearly 200 fans here as well, very delighted for them and of course we are all pleased that three points was magnificent timing for the club. But, for the supporters that came all this way, it was fantastic for them and it will be a good journey for them back.

“We have got ten days off now when we get back though and we are going to work until we are guaranteed League One at least. We are going to carry on working extremely hard and I think that is what the players think that they are going to have a few days off but I can assure you now that they are not. It is nicer seven hours home for us all now though, there is no doubt about that.”
