Scunthorpe frontman Karl Hawley (KH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Andy Wood (AW) following the Iron's 1-1 League One draw at Brunton Park against Carlisle, former Blues striker Hawley saying that he thought the Iron deserved all three points from the game:
AW
I’m guessing that your lads in the dressing room are more than happy with a point out of that today?
KH
No, I think you guessed wrong there, we are disappointed not to get the three and I think on the whole of the game we probably deserved the three points. But, that is football, the guy (David Symington) has come on and scored an absolute wonder goal and you have got to hold your hands up at the end of the day.
AW
You got yourself a goal as well, which I suppose was always written in the script, always nice for you to come back to a club and score or do you feel sometimes a little bit guilty?
KH
No, I don’t feel guilty because that is my job at the end of the day. But, I didn’t celebrate out of respect for the fans who always give me a good reception when I come back. It is nice to score but it is nice to score every week, so it doesn’t really matter who it is against.
AW
Yeah, the Carlisle fans clearly rate you as one of their favourite players of the recent past, how do you rate Carlisle as a club in your list of clubs in your time here? Enjoyable?
KH
Oh yeah, by far my best part of my whole career on the pitch and obviously off the pitch as well, I enjoyed living up here, I enjoyed the fans, I enjoyed the whole club. It is a very family based club and very welcoming and it is like a second home to me to be honest.
AW
One thing you won’t miss is the weather?
KH
Yeah, it is cutting through me at the minute but you get used to that when you live up here for a couple of years.
AW
In the paper this week there was a feature about players coming back to their old clubs and they were all scored on a pain rating on how much pain they have caused on their club in the past, you will be quite happy that you have just upped your rating slightly in that competition?
KH
Well, I am just happy to score to be honest, I am happy to be playing week in, week out and that is the main thing. I have always had belief in my own ability that if I play week in, week out that I will score the goals, and hopefully I can keep doing that for Scunthorpe.
AW
It didn’t seem watching your lads like they really reflect the league position they are in, and I would think you guys have the belief that you can drag yourself well away from those relegation places?
KH
Yeah, definitely but talk is cheap, and on paper you are only as good as the table says you are good. We have not been doing good enough and we have got to improve that. We are slowly but surely getting there and if we keep putting in performances and keep putting in the hard work then I am sure we will be fine.
