Notts County manager Shaun Derry spoke to BBC Radio Nottingham after his side's 4-1 League One win at home to Carlisle, Derry looking no further than the victory for the Magpies:
“I did say that it was just about getting the three points, let’s start with three points and see where it takes us. That is it, three points, nothing more. As far as it being a scrappy start, of course it was, but I think inbetween now and the end of the season you are going to see a few more of those. If the purists are asking for out and out attacking football, sadly we are not going to be able to deliver that for many reasons, whether it is going to be because of the pitch or for the circumstances or situation we are in.
“But, those two goals just before half-time settled us a bit going into half-time and I was pleased with the reaction in the second-half. Because, 2-0 is a bit of an uneasy scoreline at times and whoever scores that third normally wins. So, I am glad it was us. It was a fantastic header by Haydn Hollis for it, he has been very patient, we have had to nurture him through his injury and he has been knocking at the door. I am glad he has taken his chance because he is a great kid, he really is.
“What a way for Gary Liddle to score a goal as well, he won’t score many of those in his career. But, I just want to be happy with the three points today, nothing else. I have said to the lads there, don’t get carried away as we are still five points adrift of safety. So, for me I just feel that we take it into Tuesday’s game, see what happens then, if we deliver a performance like this on Tuesday then I feel that we will win the game.
“it just changes mentalities, a win today and a win on Tuesday, take it into next weekend’s home game against Colchester, our mentality changes, teams around us change as well. They look at Notts County before today and they probably said dead and buried. Well, let them think that way but I am not thinking that. The three points just gives us a little basis to take into Tuesday now and we have got another six-pointer. So, I am pleased, but I am not getting carried away, you can’t.
“There have not been many times where I have had the amount of players where I could choose from them. I said yesterday after training’s session that I could probably have picked 16 of them they were that good, and that has not happened many times before. But, I left Nathan Tyson out because he has not trained all week. He took a heavy knock last week and that is why he was on the bench and he understood that. But, for me it was a great partnership upfront today [Ronan Murray and Jimmy Spencer] and I am looking for that until the end of the season.
“Josh Vela is a young lad who is only 20 and he has come into the football club only yesterday. So, to meet his team-mates only once and then to put in a performance like that is testament to the ability he has got. But, I think it is a mental strength as well, you are looking for lads to come in and understand what situation we are in, Josh got that today, 99% of the time he made the right decisions. For me I thought he was an outstanding performer for us and in the second-half there were a few outstanding performances. “
