Walsall manager Dean Smith spoke to BBC Radio West Midlands and his club's official website after his side's 1-1 League One draw against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Smith pleased to see the Saddlers pick up their performance after the interval :
"I said to them at half-time, I was a little bit disappointed where I felt we were trying not to lose rather than trying to win the game, and I thought second-half we had a lot more belief about us, a lot more confidence in our play and we looked like we had a lot more belief when we went forward, and I thought that was important.
"We felt that we were on the front foot late on and when you feel like you have got that momentum I think you need to push on and try to score that winning goal. They have hit the bar a couple of times, one from a free-kick and Wacka (Jimmy Walker) has made two good saves, but we have hit the post and we have had one cleared off the line, and I thought it was pretty even in terms of chances.
"But, it was nice to see us against an in-form team who have just beaten Leyton Orient comfortably and Sheffield United here going at them and we showed a lot of character. For me it was a penalty, both players (Andy Butler and Frank Simek) were running away from goal but their lad caught Andy and the referee (Craig Pawson) got the decision right.
"I have just spoken to Jimmy about their penalty claim (on Francois Zoko) and he said that he knocked the ball onto the lad's shins. He was worried that the referee might have given it because of the way it was but the lad knew, he tried to stay on his feet didn't he and didn't get onto it.
"It was a disappointing start, I thought they started better than us in the first ten minutes and then we got onto the ball and had a lot of possession with only a few long range efforts really to show from it with Jamie Paterson which their keeper (Adam Collin) did well to save. But, in the second-half I thought it was a lot better, I thought that Ryan Jarvis and George Bowerman came on and gave us a lot of energy and it is nice for Alex (Nicholls) to get on the scoresheet in his 200th game for Walsall.
"He (Butler) was very frustrated with their goal because he knows he has made a mistake there. It is unlike him but he won the penalty that got our goal, he has one cleared off the line and he hit the post as well. So, he was certainly trying his hardest to get it back on an even keel and he put in a real captain's performance today.
"I hope we end up further up the table than we did last season and the way we are playing and the belief the lads have been showing then I see no reason why. The home games are massively important to us and we keep saying that, we have got a free weekend next weekend and then Notts County on the Tuesday and we need to go on and pick up three points there.
"Because, we have picked up two hard earned points against Brentford and Carlisle who are both play-off contenders at the moment and both in form, two tough places to come and with a bit more luck we could have had six points rather than two points out of the two games. But, the lads showed plenty of belief and determination today to bring home a deserved share of the spoils."
