United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke exclusively to BBC Radio Cumbria yesterday evening as he gave his thoughts on Carlisle's 1-0 FA Cup First Round defeat at Whaddon Road :

" I disagree that the better team won through on the day. I thought in the first half we had the better opportunities and we’ve had good chances. Simon Hackney in particular down the left side has got into good areas but the thing that was lacking was that final little bit. Whether it’s a little bit of luck or a real push to go and get the goal then that was all that was missing.

" I thought it was a game that neither team really deserved to win, I thought it was a draw all over. We have a long ball that goes into the box that we didn’t defend well and we get punished for it. That was the only thing that there was between the two teams. I thought in the first half we had the better chances in it and as I say maybe with a little bit more spark to us we would have got something out of the first half.

" The disallowed goal was one of them. It’s very rarely you see an offside given when there are that many bodies in there. There was a bit of a scramble, the first ball was headed back by Danny Livesey and he’s done well to get that, the centre-half has got hold of his shirt and is trying to pull him down and he’s headed it back. Glenn Murray has had a flick which has gone forward and Karl Hawley, the linesman says, was offside.

" If he’s right it’s a tremendous decision to be able to pick out that between all the bodies in there. There is no point us whinging about it now, it’s been done and it’s been given and we have to just get on with it. We have to make sure now that we go to Torquay next week and we go and start another run that keeps us climbing up the table.

" I think when you win 6-0 at home and you perform like we did last week the expectation levels do go up. This was always going to be a tough game, they were coming into this game desperate for a result on the back of a, I believe, poor performance last week where they lose at home to Mansfield. So they are always going to be scrapping for everything and a tough team to play against.

" We just didn’t quite have the spark that we had last week, maybe last week was one of those days where everything just went for us in front of goal and we shouldn’t expect that every week. Today we just didn’t have that little surge to go and push ourselves in at times when the ball is bobbling around. Particularly in the first half we didn’t let our shots go, there was quite a strong wind in that first half and I think we were looking for more shots to go and test their goalkeeper out and we didn’t do it.

" It’s not a case of saying we can concentrate on the League. We’ll say that because we haven’t got any choice in that, that’s the facts. We are out of the Cup now, there is nothing we can do about it, we have to just get on with it and we’ve got a hell of a lot still to play for.

" We’ve got some fantastic games to look forward to and that’s the thing now. We were looking before at the fixtures coming up and if we’d have got through here then we would have had a Saturday game in the FA Cup Second Round, an away trip to Rushden and an away trip to Peterborough. So we’ve got to make sure that we use the weekend as a blessing for us and we prepare properly for those two fixtures in December.

" It always seems strange having a Saturday off and it’s disappointing because you look at the Cup games and you want to still be involved in it. As I say though it’s done now, you can’t fault the way the players have worked today, they have worked their socks off. We just didn’t get the quality that we wanted around that final third but that’s not having a go at the strikers. It was just one of those days where it didn’t happen for us. We’ve got to lift ourselves and get ourselves going again.

" The supporters were absolutely tremendous again, they have travelled down in their numbers. I don’t know how many will make the journey to Torquay but I believe we will have a good following going there again. We’ve got to make sure we go there and get a performance and get a result that starts us on another run.

" Danny Livesey has just had four stitches in the head wound that he had but I don’t expect that to be too much of a problem, I think he’ll be okay. To the best of my knowledge there is nobody else with an injury, it’s a little bit early to say whether there are any problems but I don’t think there is anything too serious to worry about. "
