Reds assistant manager Viv Busby spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's John Walsh after Carlisle's 3-1 pre-season friendly win at Borough Park, Busby happy with Workington's performance :
" We have enjoyed the game, the boys have enjoyed it thoroughly. It is great for Carlisle to come over here and play us in the pre-season, and we thank them for that first of all. I thought that the performance was very good though, we had four lads missing that were away. Obviously we can't say to them that they can't go away on holiday or whatever because they are not professionals.
" So we have had to make makeshift bits and pieces with the substitutes and everything else, but everybody has got a good bout of fitness under their belt. I thought that the boys adapted quite well because Carlisle are a decent side and we conceded a goal early on which was disappointing, but they kept going and it was very hot as well, so a great workout for us and I was pleased with the performance.
" It was encouraging that we made chances considering that Michael Reed and Callum (Ruttledge) played upfront. They are not the biggest lads but I think that Adam Collin made three great saves in the first-half and that was down to their endeavour. We created those chances which is what it is all about, if you create a chance then sometimes they are going to go in.
" It is when you are not creating that you have got a problem but Adam made three great saves so we could have got ourselves on the scoresheet then. In the second-half we came out again though and we conceded again, but the boys kept going and then we got a goal back which got us back into the game, which I think they deserved the goal for the performance that they put up. "
" Then of course the last goal Lee (Andrews) is trying to dribble out past the wide-right man (Gavin Rothery) and lost the ball and bosh it is in the back of the net. Whereas if he had just smacked it out for a throw-in, no airs and graces when you are defending. As I just said to him, it could have been three points if it was a league game, it would have been three points and then all of a sudden you have only got one if you had been winning 1-0 and it makes it 1-1.
" So if you put it into a different light and show them that that is the way that they have got to be thinking about it, don't try to be pretty as a defender, last two minutes, just get the thing out. That is how we learn though and we learn from our mistakes, but I thought that the lads adapted well and put up a good performance.
" They are obviously rusty aren't they, but it is Carlisle's first game so they will be obviously be a bit rusty as well, a good run-out for them as well. You get into it and they get back to their shapes, because they do lose it over the course of the summer. The things that you got into them last season you start all over again, which is what footballers are all about. We have got games coming thick and fast now though and we are looking forward to the start of the season.
" Unbelievable he is (Tony Hopper), you just know what you are going to get out of him every week. That is why he has been a professional for as many years as he was, because he is consistent, he loves the game, I took him off because he had a bit of a problem with his back. He didn't want to come off but we have got to safeguard people like Tony and wrap him up in a bit of cotton wool really. "
" His performance and his attitude and he does things so well, so professionally, that it rubs off on the other boys. You can tell them to look at him at 33 and look at themselves at 19, what are you doing, have a lead from him and he is a superb lad.
" He (Tony Caig) is very good, you have only got to listen to him in training, you can't hear him so much in a game because he is that far away. He organises and pulls people about though, he tells people what to do and as a goalkeeper that is a massive part of your game.
" Because you can see everything in front of you, even your front players, you can tell them what to do, you can see what they have got to do, wide players. He is very good at that and he is very vocal and instrumental in the talking part of the game.
" Fair play to Michael (Reed), he has got to do what he has got to do. As a footballer you have to look after yourself so he has got the option, he has trained with Gretna and Annan want to have a look at him. He wants to come back here and have a little go and at the end of the day it will boil down to what Michael wants to do, but he has shown that he is a threat, he is lively, he works hard and he can score a goal. When you are a goalscorer though people want you don't they, so that is why he has got his options. "
" Shaun (Vipond) trained last week, I am not sure whether he is coming back or what he is doing. We hope that he is going to come back but he can't play for another three weeks I think because he broke his collarbone. So he has got three weeks to go but he can train, but he can't have bodily contact, so we are monitoring that one quite well at the moment.
" Stevie Hindmarch tore his groin while he was away on holiday. I think that he was playing a game or something, playing football, so how he has done that I don't know, he probably kicked the sand because he missed the ball and then did his groin. He has been biking and straight running but he was a little bit sore the other night after he had done some biking, so we are wrapping him up in cotton wool as well.
" I thought that the three trialists all did quite well. Mario (Campagna) is a decent central midfield player, he is confident on the ball and he is a strong lad. Cass (Darren Casson) is a good footballer, great energies, he can get up and down the park and he has got a good brain. Young Dan (Shannon), well he scored a goal last week, it was a magnificent goal, especially on Gretna's pitch which was a little bit bumpy, how he just took that first time and bent it into the top corner was great.
" I think that they have all done quite well, we are hoping that they can all turn up again on Tuesday and for the rest of the pre-season and then we will see how we go with them. Johnny Wright will be back for Tuesday, Andy Hardman and Dan Robinson, but Gareth Arnison is still away on holiday, so we will have a bit more firepower on Tuesday.
" I'll say to Darren Edmondson tonight that I hope that he is enjoying himself in Florida but that he should have been here in the sunshine watching the game, he would have been proud of the boys because they did well. He will be pleased when I speak to him and just run down through the players and how they have done and what we did. I think that 3-1 is a bit harsh on us but that is the way that it goes, it was a good workout and it is a firm base to build on. "
