The Bolton-born glovesman moves to Brunton Park for a temporary period to cover the Blues's number two spot after the loan departure of Anthony Williams to Wrexham, although with Howarth's contract apparently up at the Reebok Stadium this summer a more permanent move up the M6 could perhaps be in the offing if the 20-year old impresses during his spell in Cumbria.
Howarth, who has come through the Wanderers's Academy system and gained England schoolboy honours in 2001, currently finding himself fourth in a queue of international goalkeepers at Bolton behind Jussi Jaaskelainen (Finland), Ian Walker (England) and Ali Al-Habsi (Oman). That competition seeing the native Boltonian only make one appearance on the bench for the Trotters as an unused substitute in a Carling Cup tie at home to Leicester in November 2005.
This will be Howarth's third loan spell away from the Reebok after being a seven-time unused substitute for Stockport County in early 2006, and playing four games out of five, one as a used replacement, for Oldham Athletic at the very start of this season before a thigh injury injury curtailed his temporary period at Boundary Park. One thing that should instantly endear the 20-year old to the Brunton Park faithful though is the fact that whilst with the Latics he saved a Lee Trundle penalty in a 1-0 home win over Swansea.
