With the absence of regular back four man Danny Livesey through injury for six to eight weeks, Carlisle boss Greg Abbott is looking to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the start of the 2010-11 League One campaign, and Wood will play a part in United's second pre-season friendly, at Workington, this evening.
Wood came through the youth ranks at Hillsborough before signing a one-year professional deal in May 2009, although he was subsequently released at the end of that contract this summer. The 6'3 centre-half having been an unused substitute for the Owls just once at first-team level, in a 1-1 draw at Bristol City in late October 2009, while then two months later spending a loan spell at local neighbours Sheffield FC in the Unibond First Division South.
The 19-year old, who is the younger brother of Richard Wood, who joined Coventry City from Sheffield Wednesday part-way through last season, is now at Brunton Park for a trial spell though as he looks to continue a career in professional football. Nick making up a Carlisle trial quintet this evening at Borough Park against Workington Reds of himself, Patrick Cregg, Billy Gibson, Jake Simpson and Francois Zoko.
