With the closing of the emergency loan signing window coming up this Thursday evening at 5pm Blues boss John Ward has strengthened his cards in defence with the capture of Richard Keogh for a six-week period. The Republic of Ireland under-21 skipper filling a gap across the Blues back-line until permanent signings are allowed on January 1st.

21-year old Keogh will complete the temporary deal when he comes up to Brunton Park on Thursday, following his spell of international duty with the Republic against Bulgaria at the Lissywoolen Stadium in Athlone on Wednesday night. Keogh having already picked up eight caps to date for the under-21s, the last of those coming in a 1-0 defeat in Montenegro last Friday night.

The Harlow-born defender started his career in the Potteries where he came through the Stoke City academy, Keogh spending a loan spell away from the Midlands in Iceland with Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur in the 2004-05 season. Having not made a first-team appearance for Stoke though the 21-year old was released by the Brittannia Stadium outfit at the end of that campaign.

Keogh was then snapped up by then Bristol City boss Brian Tinnion at Ashton Gate in the summer of 2005, where he has made 34 starts and 20 substitute appearances while scoring five goals for the Robins in the process. A regular first-team spot at in-form City was hard to find for Keogh this season and last though and he has spent loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town.

The versatile defender making two starts and one substitute appearance for the Chairboys in late 2005, and ten starts, while scoring one goal, in his temporary spell with the Terriers earlier this season. Keogh's six-week sojourn at Brunton Park is subject to a 24-hour recall from Bristol City after the first 28 days of the loan deal, and it not known yet whether or not Robins boss Gary Johnson will allow the 21-year old to feature in the FA Cup for Carlisle.
