Cumberland Cup Semi-Final Draw

Last updated : 15 March 2007 By Thetashkentterror
After defeating Harraby Catholic Club 3-1 in the last eight the Blues have again been drawn at home as they face Wetheriggs United in the semi-finals. The round date is scheduled for Saturday 31st March at 1.30pm but the rules of the competition state that a side that has floodlights at their ground must play their tie in midweek, so with Carlisle having a spare reserve team date on Wednesday 28th March it looks likely that that could be the night the game goes ahead at Brunton Park.

Wetheriggs ply their trade in Division One of the Talbot Insurance Westmorland Football League, where they currently sit second in the table behind Kendal County, having won nine and lost two of their eleven league games played to date. To get to the final four the Gilwilly Recreation Ground side have won away to Longtown 3-1, defeated Silloth 3-1 at home, won 4-3 away to Windscale after extra-time and defeated Salterbeck 2-0, with Martyn Currie and Steven Hall looking likely to be the dangerman for the Castletown-based outfit having scored 16 of Riggs' 33 league goals so far.

The other match keeps the prospect of a final between the top two teams in the region, in Workington Reds and Carlisle United, alive as the Reds have been drawn at home to Gillford Park FC. The match will be no easy task for the home side though against an in-form Gillford outfit who sit second in the Northern Alliance League Premier Division having won 14 of their 16 league matches to do date, Park being seven points behind leaders Cramlington with a bumper eight games in hand.
