United's Josh Gowling
Only just over five months since signing for Carlisle in mid-June as a Bosman free transfer from Bournemouth on a two-year contract Blues centre-half Gowling has been shipped out to one of United's relegation rivals for a temporary spell. Josh, born in Coventry, moving to the Edgar Street club until the New Year in a deal that will see him be much closer to his Midlands roots.

Gowling, 25 years old this coming Friday, having only made five starts and one substitute appearance for United so far, three of those coming when centre-half Richard Keogh was out suspended, after picking up a red card for violent conduct at, coincidentally, Hereford. Josh now also being pushed for fourth spot in the pecking order in the middle of the Carlisle defence by youth team skipper Tom Aldred.

Gowling started his career with West Brom where he rose through the youth ranks before eventually being released at the age of 19. The centre-half then going on trial with Herfolge in Denmark, the link there being that the chairman of the club at the time was former Albion director Clive Stapleton. Josh spending two years in the Danish Superliga before returning to England with Bournemouth on a trial basis in the pre-season of 2005-06.

Another link there being that former Baggies coach Richard O'Kelly was now the assistant manager for Bournemouth. That leading to Gowling being signed immediately after a transfer embargo caused by an impending court case was lifted. The defender penning an initial 12-month deal, that was then extended by a further two years the following February.

Despite suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament early in the 2005-06 season that ended his campaign, Gowling would go on to make 83 starts, eleven substitute appearances, and score one goal in his three years at the Fitness First stadium with the Cherries before his move to Cumbria.
