The former Republic of Ireland international, who was Carlisle's top scorer last season with 18 goals, joined the Cumbrians as a free agent in March 2009 after being released by Blackpool in the January of that year. The 33-year old then signing a two-year contract in the summer of 2009, with that deal set to be extended last week, on the back of it's original one year option, by an extra 12 months to June 2012 until Championship side Reading showed their interest.

Harte made 66 starts, one substitute appearance and scored a remarkable 21 goals in his time at Brunton Park, with his attacking and set-piece ability likely to be missed as much as his defensive attributes. The Royals therefore understandably pleased to be snapping up Harte for, from a Carlisle perspective, yet another "undisclosed fee", with their manager Brian McDermott commenting to the official Reading website :

"He's got great experience, a wonderful left foot and he's another important addition in what we are trying to do here. Carlisle fought very hard to keep him, he was a main player for them and we're very pleased he has signed."
