New Lancaster City boss Barrie Stimpson is signing an experienced ex-Football League striker for Saturday's game at Worksop. Ian Stevens, whose former clubs include Carlisle and Bury, will be in contention for a place if he has shaken off a niggling thigh injury.

The Lancaster-based 38-year-old last played for Fleetwood Town in their promotion-winning side last season. "He has about 400 League games under his belt," Mr Stimpson added. "He has kept himself impressively fit and knows his way around."

Stevens also had good semi-pro experience. It was hoped he would play a dual role, helping out with coaching young strikers at Giant Axe. "We can get great benefit from his experience," Stimpson added. "I hope he will be a great asset.

Stevens, signed initially from Shrewsbury for £100,000 in May 2005, played for the Blues in two spells at Brunton Park, in the dark days of the mad-Michael Knighton era, but such worries didn't stop the Maltese born striker scoring 51 times in 144 starts for United.
