To get to the northern quarter-final stage Crewe, like Carlisle, received a bye at the round one stage before claiming their only away win of the season with a 4-2 victory at Macclesfield in the second round. A remarkable three own goals were scored in the tie though with both Silkmen strikes coming through Patrick Ada putting into in his own net, while on the Alex' scoresheet were Colin Daniel (og), Lee Bell (pen), David Artell and Joel Grant.
Carlisle have played the Railwaymen just once in the Football League Trophy, with that game being played at Gresty Road in 1994-95 in a match that the Blues won 1-0. As for United's record in other competitions at home to Crewe, well it is pretty good, the Cumbrians having won 27 of their 41 games at Brunton Park over the years, three ending in draws while the remaining 11 have finished in Alex' victories.
Elsewhere in the northern part of the draw Sheffield Wednesday face Hartlepool at home and there is a Yorkshire derby at the Don Valley Stadium between Rotherham and Huddersfield. Bury meanwhile, in an almost exact repeat of last year's quarter-final draw, having their travel arrangements finalised while the FA decide the fate of Accrington Stanley and Ray Putterill.
The standout game in the southern section is obviously the Devon derby between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City at Home Park, with the draw in full being as follows :
North
Carlisle United v Crewe Alexandra
Rotherham United v Huddersfield Town
Bury v Accrington Stanley or Stockport County
Sheffield Wednesday v Hartlepool United
South
Swindon Town v Brentford
Plymouth Argyle v Exeter City
Southend United v Charlton Athletic
Wycombe Wanderers v Bristol Rovers
Ties to be played in the week commencing Monday 8th November
