The most famous of those ties being the Northern Section final in 1997 that saw the Blues win 2-0 at home in the first leg thanks to an Owen Archdeacpn brace in front of 7,057 spectators. United then going to Edgeley Park and drawing 0-0 to go through to the final at Wembley which they would then win 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of play against Colchester.
Like Carlisle, who got a bye in the first round, Stockport also came in at the second round stage of the competition this season. The Hatters winning 1-0 in a Cheshire derby at Macclesfield, the only goal of the game coming in the 59th minute through Paul Tierney in front of a healthy attendance of 2,248 at the Moss Rose.
After surprising a lot of people last year by finishing just outside the play-off spots on goal difference County currently sit in 12th spot in the League Two table, the Hatters having one of the best scoring records in the division only for that to be matched by the amount of goals they concede. They have also struggled on the road with only one win away from Edgeley Park in the league this season.
The remainder of the draw sees the other League One leading lights, in Leeds and Hartlepool, both receiving home ties against League Two opposition as well in Bury and Morecambe respectively, although 'Pools will have to watch their step against a Shrimps side who have already knocked out Preston and Wolves in the League Cup this season.
The quarter final draw in full is as follows :
