Legs Eleven For United In FA Cup Draw

FA Cup
A total of 64 non-league teams will be competing on Saturday and Sunday afternoon (when FC United play Barrow at home) for 32 spots in the first round proper of the 2010-11 FA Cup. The 48 clubs in the bottom two rungs of the Coca-Cola Football League will already be waiting for them, having received a bye to that stage.

The teams that do make it through the fourth qualifying round will earn themselves £12,500 for the privilege. That is a tidy sum for any non-league club and a good run in the FA Cup often sets up some of the smaller clubs at that level for a season or two.

The Cumbrians will be hoping to make the third round of the competition again after getting to that stage of the FA Cup last season. Carlisle, backed by 6,000 supporters on Merseyside, eventually going down 3-1 against Everton at Goodison Park after defeating Morecambe, following a replay, and Norwich in the first and second rounds.

Not only is it a good chance to progress to the third round for a potential payday once more but there is also the opportunity to stick £45,000 in the coffers on the way. The prize fund, which in these times of recession over the last two years is down by about 5% to 10% in each "proper" round from 2008, breaks down thus :

Fourth Round Qualifying Winners - £12,500
First Round Proper Winners - £18,000
Second Round Proper Winners - £27,000
Third Round Proper Winners - £67,500
Fourth Round Proper Winners - £90,000
Fifth Round Proper Winners - £180,000
Sixth Round Proper Winners - £360,000
Semi-Final Losers - £450,000
Semi-Final Winners - £900,000
Final Loser - £900,000
Final Winner - £1,800,000

In the First Round Proper the draw is NOT regionalised so if the Blues are given an away day we could find ourselves anywhere from Hartlepool to Yeovil.

The draw will be broadcast live on the FA website and ITV1 in a special programme broadcast betweem 12.30pm and 1pm, and if you can abide watching Norman Cook and Helen Chamberlain pick the balls out then Blues fans will be on tenterhooks as we wait for the number ELEVEN ball to appear and the name of Carlisle United to be read out.
