Carlisle United are delighted to announce that former-Blues midfielder Paul Murray has returned home to take post as first team coach, on a two-year deal, where he’ll be working beside new gaffer John Sheridan with immediate effect.

Carlisle-born Murray, 41, started his career with the Blues and made his debut as a 17-year-old before going on to make 65 appearances over two spells, scoring twice, for his home town club.

His accomplished performances earned him a move to Queens Park Rangers when he was still only 19, and he went on to make over 150 appearances at Loftus Road through a near five-year stay.

His playing career [533 appearances and 30 goals] took him to Southampton, Oldham, Gretna, Shrewsbury and Hartlepool, and also included that return to Brunton Park and two seasons in Portugal with Beira-Mar.

A fully qualified coach, he has taken the reins at Hartlepool and Barrow and has most recently been working as development team manager with Fleetwood Town.

Speaking about the appointment, manager John Sheridan said: “I’ve worked with Paul before and he has the type of character and work ethic I like. He’s very highly thought of at Fleetwood, so it’s good for us that he’s agreed to make this move to Cumbria and to get on board with what we want to achieve.

“He’s keen to get started and he wants the same things I do, which is to win games and to get this club back to where we think it should be.

“Obviously he knows this club and city inside out, he knows how the fans think and, with the close affiliation he has, I know he’s coming here to help us to succeed.

“He’s an excellent coach who knows how I do things, and I’m really looking forward to working with him through what is a busy and important period for the club.”
