What A Load Of Old Balls (Part One)

Last updated : 22 October 2005 By Thetashkentterror
A total of 64 non-league teams will be competing this Saturday afternoon for 32 spots in the First Round Proper of the 2005-06 FA Cup. The 48 clubs in the bottom two rungs of the Coca-Cola Football League will already be waiting for them, having received a bye to that stage.

The teams that do make it through the Fourth Qualifying Round will earn themselves £10,000 for the privilege. That is a tidy sum for any non-league club to receive and a good run in the FA Cup often sets up some of the smaller clubs at that level for a season or two.

They won't have long thing to think about the money though as 20 minutes after the final whistle has gone they will be glued to the TV or radio to see who they have drawn in the next round.

The draw for the First Round Proper will be made from FA headquarters in Soho Square at 5.10pm on Saturday evening by Sir Tom Finney CBE who needs no introduction and Roy Bentley who won the League Championship with Chelsea in 1955.

It will be a good reminder for United that they are back in the Football League as while the non-leaguers will be scrapping it out in the Fourth Qualifying Round the Blues will be away to Notts County in a League fixture.

The Cumbrians will be hoping to make the Third Round of the competition for the first time since the 2000-01 season when they were given a dream tie. A repeat of that draw when over 15,000 packed into Brunton Park to see a Sylvian Wiltord goal clinch a 1-0 victory for Arsenal would be very nice.

Not only is it a good chance to progress to the Third Round for a potential payday but there is also the opportunity to stick £40,000 in the coffers on the way. The prize fund breaks down thus :

Fourth Round Qualifying Winners - £10,000
First Round Proper Winners - £16,000
Second Round Proper Winners - £24,000
Third Round Proper Winners - £40,000
Fourth Round Proper Winners - £60,000
Fifth Round Proper Winners - £120,000
Sixth Round Proper Winners - £300,000
Semi-Final Winners - £900,000
Competition Winner - £1,000,000

In the First Round Proper the draw is NOT regionalised so if the Blues are given an away day we could find ourselves anywhere from Hartlepool to Torquay.

The draw will be broadcast live on the FA website, the BBC and Sky Sports News and Blues fans will be on tenterhooks as we wait for the number ELEVEN ball to appear and the name of Carlisle United to be read out.
