Carlisle United are set for their third transfer bonus of the summer – thanks to rising England star Dean Henderson.

The teenage goalkeeper, who started out at Carlisle’s academy, is on the verge of signing professional terms with Manchester United. The Cumbrians stand to benefit when the 18-year-old puts pen to paper.

Whitehaven-born Henderson was one of several teenage prospects offered pro terms by the Premier League giants recently.

A senior contract will activate one of the clauses in the deal that took the young west Cumbrian to the Red Devils in 2011.

It will trigger a payment from the mega-rich Old Trafford club to Carlisle.

And it will mean more money heading into the Brunton Park coffers following the departure this summer of home-grown first-team players Brad Potts and Kyle Dempsey.

Henderson has risen through the ranks impressively since joining Man Utd four years ago.

The former St Benedict’s School boy has been capped by England Under-17s.

He has also figured regularly for Man United’s Under-18s and will soon be pushing for a place in their Under-21 side.

His move from Carlisle came when Henderson was 14, having been on the Blues’ books for six years.

He was originally spotted by Carlisle’s football in the community coaches and joined the Blues as an outfield player before being converted to a keeper.

Manchester United struck a compensation deal with Carlisle in 2011 having tracked the youngster for several years, amid interest from other top clubs including Chelsea and Newcastle.

Henderson has been described as “outstanding” by Under-18 coach Paul McGuinness after a season when he was shorlisted for the Jimmy Murphy young player of the year award at Old Trafford.

Academy coach Alan Fettis told the Man Utd website the teenager has a “first-class” attitude and “has the potential to become an excellent goalkeeper”.

It is further believed that Carlisle will benefit from further clauses should Henderson make the first-team grade.

The Blues would not comment on the detail of the transfer agreement with Man Utd
