The Cumbrians started brightly and took the lead with 18 minutes on the clock, some slick passing from left to right seeing Kevin Gall thump an unstoppable volley from just outside the box way beyond the reach of Burnley's trialist goalkeeper James Beasant, son of legendary glovesman Dave.
Reid was then replaced at half-time by Dan Wordsworth for the Blues as he felt his groin tighten up. Both sides had chances to trouble the scorers, with Alex McDonald for the Clarets heading against the post being the home side's best chance. United hung on for the win though and their next chance for a second-string victory comes next Wednesday night when they visit Tranmere in a 7pm kick-off.
