Manchester City Reserves 2-0 United Reserves

Williams - red card
The 2-0 loss was the Blues' fourth in their opening eight games and it's difficult now to see them holding onto their Pontin's Holidays League Division One West title at the end of the season, the Cumbrians already lagging nine points behind table-toppers Oldham, having also played one more game than the Latics to date.

Like the United first-team their second-string counterparts have failed to win in any of their league matches on the road this season, and tonight would prove no different as two goals in the last 21 minutes saw the Citizens claim all three points. After a drab and uninspiring first-half the match finally sparked into action after 69 minutes when Blues keeper Anthony Williams brought down City striker Ashley Grimes in the Carlisle penalty area.

Williams received his marching orders for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, United then having to sacrifice an outfield player to bring on substitute glovesman Adam Bradley. The Cumbrians' third-choice keeper couldn't have got off to a better start as he saved Grimes resultant penalty, only for City's Ian Daly to chest down the rebound and volley the ball home into the empty Carlisle net.

The Citizens doubled their lead and effectively killed off the match just four minutes later when Grimes bagged his brace on the evening as he curled an 18-yard shot beyond Bradley and into the United goal. The home side played out the closing stages under no real threat, and Blues reserve-team boss Greg Abbott will certainly be looking for a much better performance at home to Chester City next Wednesday in a 2pm kick-off at Brunton Park.
