Manchester City moved above United and into sixth in the table after winning 2-0 at Wrexham on Tuesday night in a match played at Globe Way, the home of Buckley Town FC. Ben Morris opened the scoring for the Citizens in the 25th minute, and James Poole sealed the win with the second goal ten minutes after the interval. Gregor Rioch's side now have a gap in their fixture list until their next game, which is at home to Chester City on January 24th.

After losing their first five games Preston have now won four on the bounce and they also leap above Carlisle in the table, their latest victory coming by virtue of a 4-1 away thumping of Blackpool at Highbury, Fleetwood Town FC, on Wednesday night. Callum Davidson returned from injury to open the scoring for the Lilywhites on 27 minutes with Andy Smith doubling North End's six minutes later, although 'Pool did manage to pull a goal back on the stroke of half-time through Matty Kay.

Two second-half goals from veteran North End striker Danny Dichio on 66 and 90 minutes sealed the win for the visitors though against a Seasiders second-string side which wasn't helped by the sending-off of Rory Prendergast for violent conduct. Prendergast will now serve a three match ban over the busy Christmas period for that indiscretion and he will miss the Boxing Day derby clash at Bloomfield Road against Carlisle.

Accrington's scheduled match away to Tranmere was postponed due to a Lancashire County Cup game at Rochdale taking precedence for Stanley over the league fixture with Rovers. The Reds winning through to the semi-finals and a home tie with Bolton thanks to a 3-2 victory over the 'Dale, Accrington's goals coming from Andy Mangan, Shaun Whalley and Andy Smith, while Ernie Cooksey and Darrell Clarke netted for the 'Dale.

Meanwhile United will be hoping to show some improved form in the division when the league starts up again after the Christmas break on Monday the 8th of January. Carlisle have to wait much longer than that for their next game though as that comes on Wednesday the 24th of January when the Blues travel down to Dark Lane, the home of Rossendale United, to take on Rochdale in an away fixture.
