Preston moved up to second spot in the table with an entertaining 5-3 win away to Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground on Monday night. Neil Mellor put North End 1-0 up after ten minutes only for Wes Baynes to equalise for the Welshmen seven minutes later. Basque-born forward Juan Ugarte then netting for the home side on 54 minutes before the Lilywhites this time levelled midway through the second-half.
Andy Fleming put the Red Dragons ahead once more with 68 minutes on the clock, but that was the last of the scoring for Wrexham as Preston rattled in three goals in a six minute spell to secure a 5-3 win. Mellor and Ormerod both bagging their personal braces on 76 and 79 respectively before Simon Whaley wrapped up all three points with an 81st minute strike.
There were plenty of goals in the division this week and Bury and Manchester City didn't disappoint either as the Shakers won 4-2 at the Regional Athletic Arena. Atay Adem on three minutes and Dominic Taylor after 45 minutes putting the visitors 2-0 ahead at the interval before Nicky Adams made it a three-goal lead for Bury ten minutes into the second-half.
City pulled a goal back when prolific youth striker Ched Evans converted a 78th minute penalty, only for Bury to restore their large advantage when an own goal by home keeper Richard Martin put the visitors 4-1 ahead with three minutes left. Evans's second goal of the game just sixty seconds later not stopping the Shakers from going back to Gigg Lane with the win.
Morecambe kept the only unbeaten run in the league going when they won 2-1 at home to Accrington Stanley at Christie Park on Wednesday night. Ex-United defender Simon Grand opening the scoring four minutes after a goalless first-half before Wayne Curtis made it 2-0 to the Shrimps on 69 minutes. A Leighton McGivern spot-kick with two minutes to go only proving to be a consolation goal for the visitors.
Blackpool and Rochdale fought out a 1-1 draw at Highbury, the home of Fleetwood Town FC, on Wednesday evening. Visitors Rochdale scoring through Ben Wharton right on the stroke of half-time only for Phil Doughty to level for the Tangerines bang on the hour-mark. Neither side then being able to find a late winner as the points were shared.
As we already know Chester defeated Carlisle 4-2 at Brunton Park on Wednesday afternoon, that three points for City seeing them move to the summit of the table with their fourth win in five games. The division takes a week off next week with a round of first-team fixtures scheduled, United's next second-string match coming on Wednesday the 10th of October away to Accrington Stanley.
