The Shrimps are the surprise package this season in their first reserve campaign at this level and they remain unbeaten now in their opening eight games. Ex-Carlisle man Simon Grand has certainly been amongst the goals too in the Pontin's Holidays League and he managed to bag himself a brace at the Deva Stadium last night as early as the 21st minute.

Further strikes from Jamie Burns after 38 minutes and Wayne Curtis three minutes later seeing the visitors go into the interval with a bumper four-goal lead. The second-half was somewhat quieter fare despite City's Phil Bolland being sent off for violent account early in the proceedings, the only goal after the break coming the way of Morecambe's Matty Poole in the 81st minute to complete a surprising 0-5 scoreline.

Preston are the team to have lost top spot to the Shrimps this week after they could only draw 3-3 at Deepdale against Manchester City on Tuesday afternoon. The visitors took the lead in the opening sixty seconds through Ben Mee with North End then hitting back to take a 2-1 lead into the interval thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Neil Mellor.

North End then went 3-1 ahead when Patrick Agyemang netted on the hour-mark as the home side looked to have sealed all three points. The Citizens had other ideas though and two late strikes from youngster Ched Evans, a Welsh under-21 international striker who is prolific at this level, ensuring that honours finished even in an entertaining clash.

Burnley remain third after winning 3-1 away to Accrington on Wednesday night, the Clarets actually play their second-string games at the Fraser Eagle Stadium so it was as near a home fixture as they were ever going to get. "The visitors" were already 3-0 up after goals from Jay Rodriguez, Garreth O'Connor and James O'Connor before Leighton McGivern grabbed a consolation goal for Stanley from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to go.

As we already know Carlisle drew 1-1 at Bury yesterday afternoon, the Blues drawing level through Luke Joyce after the Shakers had taken an early lead. With the FA Youth Cup scheduled for next week the division takes seven days off, United's next second-string match coming in two weeks time when they face Rochdale at Brunton Park.
