Morecambe won the title last season but they started off with a defeat this time around as they lost 5-3 at Christie Park against Tranmere. The visitors went 2-0 up early on through Aaron Cresswell and Chris Shuker before Michael Twiss pulled a goal back for the Shrimps just before the break.

Chris Greenacre then made it 3-1 to Tranmere shortly after the interval before Stewart Drummond quickly replied for Morecambe, Twiss then scoring his second goal of the game on 80 minutes to pull matters level at 3-3. Rovers scored twice in the final three minutes though to claim a 5-3 victory thanks to Greenacre and Shuker both completing a brace of goals on the night.

Just down the road at Highbury, Fleetwood Town FC, Manchester City defeated Blackpool 3-1. Alex-John Baptiste was sent off for a professinal foul for the home side Seasiders in the first-half before Steve Kabba put them 1-0 up early after the interval. Three late goals in the last 12 minutes from Gregory Cunningham, Alex Nimely-Tchuimeni and Abdisalam Ibrahim broke Blackpool hearts though and ensured that the Citizens stole all three points.

At Irongate, Bamber Bridge FC, Preston also won 3-1, at home to Accrington Stanley. Chris Turner put the visitors 1-0 up on 17 minutes with Neil Dougan then equalising for North End shortly before the interval. Preston having a Nathan Fairhurst penalty saved before Dominic Collins and an own goal from Stanley first-year professional Peter Murphy sealed a win for the Lilywhites.

Burnley, playing at home to Bury at Accrington Stanley's Fraser Eagle stadium, started their season off with a 3-0 win. Peruvian goalkeeper Diego Penny making some good saves for the Clarets before Chris Lynch in the first-half, and then a Jay Rodriguez brace after the interval meant that the Shakers went home with nothing to show for their early efforts.

As we already know Carlisle defeated Rochdale 4-1 at Brunton Park on Monday afternoon. United's goals coming from Gary Madine, Luke Joyce, Darren Campion and Michael Bridges, after Joe Thompson had given the visitors the lead. The next second-string game for the Blues comes on Wednesday night when they make the trip to Accrington Stanley.

Going back to last season Nottingham Forest failed in their bid to land the Pontin's Holiday League play-off title for the second successive year at the start of this month. The Tricky Trees, winners of the Central division, losing 4-2 at home to Manchester City, who finished second, and as the overall runner-up with the best record, in the West division.

Ben Mee opened the scoring in the tenth minute for the visitors, with Forest's Adam Newbold equalising from the penalty spot after 37 minutes. A Tom Sharpe own goal and a Karl Moore strike made it 3-1 to City with 15 minutes left, as then Mark Byrne and Abdisalam Ibrahim swapped goals late on for the home and away side respectively, to leave the final scoreline at 4-2 to the Mancunians.
