Rochdale and Morecambe, who play in the division, fought out an entertaining match in their group of the league cup, the sides drawing 3-3 at Christie Park. Matty Blinkhorn gave the home Shrimps the lead early on before three 'Dale goals, from Dennis Sherriff (2) and Lee McEvilly made the scoreline 3-1 to the visitors at the break. Two second-half strikes from Aaron Taylor for Morecambe though ensured that honours finished even.
That result meaning that Accrington Stanley won Group Four, and as a subsequence their now dead rubber away to Tranmere next week has understandably been cancelled. Newcastle United and Sunderland have also called off their final Group One game, the Toon throwing in the towel as they would have needed to beat the Mackems by seven clear goals to take first place and qualify for the semi-finals.
The recently made draw for the last four stage seeing Accrington Stanley (Group Four) take on Sunderland (G1) at home, while Grimsby Town (G2) face a trip to Derby County (G3). As for Carlisle, their next game comes in a fortnight's time when they travel to Tranmere for a 7pm kick-off league fixture on Wednesday the 11th of February.
