United doubled their lead shortly before the interval when Luke Joyce netted from close range after the home defence had failed to clear a corner. The 'Dale fought back though and striker Adam Le Fondre had a curling effort well tipped onto the crossbar by Cumbrians goalkeeper Chris Howarth, with Dennis Sherriff also striking the Carlisle woodwork shortly after entering the fray as a second-half substitute.
The Blues made sure of the win in the 78th minute though when Jeff Smith headed home from a Carlton cross. Rochdale still threatened to snatch another goal late on however when Howarth did well to save from Joe Thompson. The next game for Carlisle in the reserves league is Rochdale again, this time at home, in a 7pm kick-off on Wednesday night at Brunton Park.
