Stephen Hindmarch - Derek Holmes
Gari Rowntree - Luke Joyce - Neale McDermott
Dan Kirkup
James Krause - Liam Atkin - Kevin Gray - Paul Arnison
Adam Bradley
Three minutes later Hindmarch was just unable to get on the end of a cross in from the left by Rowntree, then after nine minutes the Catholics replied with a 25-yarder from Alan Casey dribbling wide of Bradley's far-post. Shortly afterwards United cleared away a Harraby free-kick in and some dodgy defending on the half-way line allowed Hindmarch the chance to run in on the opposition goal, his left-footed shot, after cutting in from the right, was sliced well wide of the far-post though.
On 13 minutes ex-Blues YTS striker Rob Bainbridge fired straight at Bradley from long-range, then two minutes later, after some head tennis on the edge of the Carlisle area, Marc Shiel fired well over the angle of the far-post and bar with a left-footed half-volley from 25 yards out. Some nice link-up play after 19 minutes between another two one-time Carlisle YTS's, in Matty Bell and Gary Brown, saw Mike Swift have a powerful left-footed drive well blocked by Arnison on the edge of the 'D'.
The Blues bagged their second goal of the game sixty seconds later when a long diagonal ball over the top from Kirkup fell straight into the run of Rowntree down the left-hand channel. Rowntree, who impressed at times, scooting on into the box before firing a left-footed shot across Casson and into the Harraby net from 15 yards out. Two minutes on and Rowntree almost scored again when Holmes and McDermott set the 18-year old up to round Casson on the far-edge of the Catholics box. The chance was on his weaker right foot though and his shot on goal was easily blocked.
After 24 minutes Kirkup's long-range effort was fumbled around his near-post by the overworked Casson, McDermott sending in the corner which was subsequently headed over the bar from close range by Kirkup who had stayed forward for the flag-kick. Just before the half-hour mark Rowntree sent Krause away down the left-wing, the Ipswich-loanee sending in an excellent pacey cross across the six-yard box which sadly no Carlisle player took a chance to get on the end of.
Krause conceded a free-kick out on the left on 33 minutes from which Brown sent in a vicious set-piece across the Blues area, the ball coming back in only for Harraby left-back Jordan Coulthard to half-volley miles over the top from 22 yards out. After a quiet spell in the game the Catholics did pull a goal back in the 43rd minute when another great ball in from the right by Brown flew over the top of Bradley and into the run of Bainbridge at the far-post. Bainbridge able to easily volley the ball home with his left foot from close range. The last action of the half came sixty seconds later when Arnison fired a fierce 25-yarder straight into the grateful gloves of Casson.
Two minutes into the second period and Hindmarch laid the ball off to Holmes running down the right-hand channel, although Holmes was unable to get a proper shot away as Casson came off his line quickly to close down the angle. On 48 minutes a lovely passing move involving Joyce, McDermott and Holmes saw the ball fed back to Hindmarch 22 yards out, the young frontman didn't have his shooting boots on though as his left-footed effort was sliced a good way wide of the far-post.
Six minutes later Hindmarch this time sent Holmes racing away down the left-hand channel, Holmes firing in neither a shot nor a cross from 15 yards out which only went out at the back-stick for a Harraby goal-kick. After 57 minutes a dreadful pass across the back by Arnison saw the ball run through to Bradley after Bainbridge had just failed to control an attemped interception. Shortly afterwards McDermott, who had been limping around with a shin injury for two minutes after a tough, but fair, 50-50 challenge with Coulthard was replaced by youth team skipper Shaun Vipond.
Bang on the hour-mark and Arnison and Kirkup combined to set-up Holmes 22 yards out, Holmes then teeing himself up for a left-footed volley which managed to hit the roof of the Warwick Road End stand. Nine minutes later the Blues restored their two goal lead in somewhat surprising circumstances after Rowntree was fouled by Brown 40 yards out on the left. Rowntree stepping up to take the set-piece, which fairly flew on the gusty wind over the head of everyone, including Casson, and into the Harraby goal at the far-post.
The break in play for the kick-off seeing Gary Madine enter the fray for Hindmarch for the Blues. With fifteen minutes to go a cross in from the right by Shiel saw Bainbridge take the ball in on his chest before hitting a left-footed half-volley which was deflected over the United crossbar. Before the corner was taken, which incidentally came to nothing, the Catholics made their first change of the night when Bainbridge was replaced by Roy Holliday.
On 79 minutes Casson was able to make an easy catch after Holmes had headed in on goal from eight yards out following a Rowntree cross in from the left. Sixty seconds later and Dave Wallace came on for Bell for Harraby, but it was United pressing Wallace into defensive action shortly afterwards on the edge of his own penalty area when the substitute had to make a block tackle on Atkin who had made a barnstorming run forward out of the Blues back-line.
With seven minutes to go in the tie a ball by Vipond over the top of the Catholics right-back found Rowntree 18 yards out at the back-stick. Rowntree taking a quick touch before firing inches above the crossbar from the left of the 'D'. That was the last moment of the match for the trialist, who looks to be worth another reserve game as he trains with the club for a week, as he was immediately replaced by Andy Hardman. Joint Catholics manager, and United Football In The Community Officer, James Tose was the last substitute used on the night when he came on for Casey in the 87th minute.
The last chance of what was a pretty patchy game as a whole came a minute into injury time when Vipond played in Joyce 20 yards out, Joyce firing in a fierce right-footed shot which saw Casson make an excellent one-handed save as he pushed the ball around his post. The final whistle soon coming on a game which the Blues certainly hadn't had all their own way in progressing to the semi-final of the competition, although a well-organised Harraby side never really did enough to look like causing a cup upset.
