Carlisle started the game brightly and played some nice stuff in the first-half, but it was Rovers who had the best chance of the opening period when Mike Jones could only shoot straight at Blues keeper Chris Howarth. After the break Thirlwell, after completing his pre-planned sixty minutes, was replaced by Connor Tinnion as the Cumbrians looked to protect their skipper.
The task was made harder for Rovers when striker Craig Curran was sent off for a second booking on 55 minutes for a foul on Howarth, Curran being one of a somewhat trigger-happy eight yellow cards in the game. Ryan Mitchell then headed over and Terry Gornell shot inches wide from close-range as Tranmere looked for a late winner, only for it to fall to United in the 84th minute.
Danny Carlton, for his 13th reserve team goal of the season, heading home from a Kevin Gall corner. Carlisle, with just two second-string games left to play, take a break from league action next week to fit in the Cumberland Cup final at home to Penrith Town, the match taking place on Wednesday night in a 7.30pm kick-off at Brunton Park.
