Gary Madine - bagged a brace
The sun shone on Brunton Park this afternoon for the last game of United's reserve team campaign of 2008-09, the Blues line-up strengthened with the inclusion upfront of Andy Cook and Gary Madine, both having returned after the weekend from respective loan spells at Workington and Rochdale. Cian Hughton also in the starting eleven as the former Spurs right-back continues his extended trial with the Cumbrians.

It was no more than a Bury youth team that Carlisle faced and that was evident throughout as the Blues could even have had more than the six goals they did score. United having the first goal attempt in the fourth minute when Cook was fouled just to the left of the 'D' by Andrai Jones, Gavin Rothery stepping up to take the set-piece only to thump it left-footed over the top.

Hughton was overlapping on the right for a lot of the game and three minutes later his chipped ball in from that flank was headed on to the inside of the Bury far-post by Cook eight yards out, Cook then from a similar distance seeing his right-footed shot on the rebound deflected behind off the legs of Ryan Barrow.

Carlisle weren't finished there though and from the Rothery corner in Blues skipper Tom Aldred, six yards out at the back-stick, saw his header cleared off the line by Lee Pugh. The ball flying out at speed to Jonny Blake who didn't have the time on the penalty spot to get much aim on his header as it zoomed back over the visitors crossbar.

With 12 minutes gone Rothery cut in from the right only to pull a weak left-footed effort wide of the target from 20 yards out. Madine then setting up Rothery sixty seconds later for a ball across the Shakers six-yard line, fortunately for Bury though Barrow was on-hand to clear the danger away from in front of Cook.

The visitors having their first goal attempt on 17 minutes thanks to a right-footed 25-yarder from Chris Mason that flew straight into the arms of Alex Mitchell. It was soon Carlisle attacking though and three minutes later, after a handball on a Hughton cross by Pugh, Jeff Smith stuck the free-kick in left-footed from the East Stand/Waterworks corner, an under-pressure Cook then heading wide of the near-post from six yards out.

After 23 minutes Bury's Josh Rothwell touched possession off for Kyle McGonigle to fire a left-footed 25-yarder in low to Mitchell's far-post, Mitchell seeing the ball late and doing well to push the ball wide for a corner, which produced nothing. Four minutes later Smith hit a nice diagonal ball over the top for Rothery on the right, Rothery's right-footed chip in seeing Andy Parkinson head the ball behind in front of Cook, only for Morpeth referee Paul Curry to award a goal-kick to the Shakers.

Bury had a rare attack on 33 minutes when Barrow put a cross in from the right which Ryan Kenyon could only head well wide of Mitchell's far-post from 15 yards out. Carlisle then having the next two attacks in the space of sixty seconds around the 37 minute mark, Smith and Madine first setting Cook up for a right-footed 15-yard strike that was well blocked by Josh Rothwell before Blake pulled a left-footed shot wide of the target from 22 yards out.

Blake went closer two minutes later though when, after Jones had headed a Smith free-kick, awarded for a foul on Hughton by Pugh, out for a corner, Rothery's flag-kick in found the United midfielder sending a flicked header inches wide of the far-post from just outside the six-yard box.

Carlisle did take the lead in the 42nd minute though when Madine and Smith worked a short corner, Madine then dribbling past two defenders before feigning to cross six yards out at the near-post only to curl the ball into the net over the top of Shakers goalkeeper Ryan Fradd. United then making it 2-0 just moments later when Cook at the far-post get on the end of an excellent Smith ball in from the left to thump home a six-yard header.

A minute into first-half injury-time Barrow hit a long range right-footer well wide of Mitchell's far-post. The last action before the interval though coming the way of Carlisle when, following a Michael Burns chipped ball over the top, Madine hammered a left-footed half-volley from 18 yards out straight at Fradd at the Bury near-post.

Straight from the kick-off in the second period United were attacking after a foul 22 yards out on the left-hand angle of the box by Jones on Cook. Rothery's right-footed free-kick flying across the penalty area and past everyone before Fradd had to get down quickly to push it behind, Smith's resultant left-footed corner in then being cleared away by Bury's Billy Crawshaw.

Andy Cook - two goals
With 49 minutes gone Cook was on the end of a pass through the middle by Madine, the Blues youngster taking the ball round Fradd only to then be presented with an impossible angle on the by-line, his right-footed shot therefore going behind of the outside of the far-post. Smith then sixty seconds later cutting in from the left before seeing his 20-yard drive on his right boot cleared away by Jones at the Shakers near-post.

Shortly afterwards Cook held play up well before feeding the ball out to Smith on the left. Smith though neither shooting nor crossing from 12 yards out as his left-footed effort came in like a rocket before flying behind off the knees of Cook on the six-yard line. Four minutes later and it was the Blues again when Rothery's right-footed flag-kick in from the East Stand/Waterworls corner was headed wide by Aldred 12 yards out at the far-post.

Rothery somehow managed to miss an open goal in the 57th minute when Madine laid in Smith for a cross from the left. Rothery racing in onto the end of it only to shin the ball wide of the back-stick from no more than four yards out. There was no mistake from Blake on the hour-mark though when, just outside the six-yard box, he headed powerfully past Fradd from a Rothery right-wing cross to make it 3-0 to the Cumbrians.

The break in play before the kick-off seeing both sides make a change as Conor Tinnion replaced Smith for United and Zach Rothwell came on for Crawshaw as far as the Shakers were concerned. Just after the midway point in the half and from Madine's ball over the top Cook took the ball past Fradd only to be forced wide and eventually crowded out by the Bury defence.

Cook did find the net on 70 minutes though when Tinnion's cross in from the left was only part-cleared straight back out to him. Cook taking a quick touch inside the visitors 'D' before smashing a right-footed strike low into the far corner beyond the reach of Fradd. That being the signal for the second Bury substitution as Luke McCarthy replaced McGonigle.

Four minutes later and Blake almost got his second goal of the game when Barrow headed out Hughton's cross in from the right straight to him. The United midfielder then curling a 22-yard right-footed effort inches wide of the Bury left-hand post with Fradd well beaten in the middle of his goal.

Carlisle were really piling forward now and in the 76th minute, from a Burns pass down the left-hand channel over the top, Cook lobbed the ball right-footed over the top of Fradd from 15 yards out, the effort looking like it was going well wide before Josh Rothwell cleared his lines anyway. Hughton and Rothery then combining sixty seconds later, Hughton was off balance though 15 yards out and his right-footed strike only sailed over the top.

The Blues made the scoreline 5-0 with nine minutes to go when Burns fed the ball in for Madine with his back to goal, the United striker then producing an excellent turn as he smacked a left-footed shot in from 22 yards out that left Fradd with no chance as it arrowed low and straight into the bottom corner of the net.

Three minutes later and Mitchell was forced to palm over the top a powerfully hit close range strike from Mason. Zach Rothwell's corner in then being headed out by Aldred only for Josh Rothwell to pick up on the clearance. The right-footed 25-yard half-volley from him taking a deflection on its way in, that making Mitchell's full length one-handed save away to his left even better, Mitchell then getting a rest as the resultant Zach Rothwell flag-kick in produced nothing.

After 85 minutes the man with no number came on in place of Fradd in goal, but as the Shakers only had three players on the bench it had to be Richard Brannigan. The new goalkeeper watching from afar though two minutes later when Steven Swinglehurst had the ball nicked off his toes by Kenyon. Bury's number ten not exactly worrying Mitchell however as his right-footed shot from only 15 yards out was pulled horribly wide of the target.

Sixty seconds before time Tinnion stuck a cross in from the left, Blake then trying an overhead kick on it from the penalty spot only to see it go well wide of the target. Blake was involved in Carlisle's final goal in the last minute, his ball over the top for Cook seeing Brannigan's attempted long distance clearance go straight to the right boot of Rothery 30 yards out, Rothery then left with the simple task of curling it into an empty net to bring the curtain down on United's second-string season.
