Carlisle returned to league action this week after their scheduled match at home to Accrington last Saturday was waterlogged off at Creighton. Somewhat unsurprisingly it was a wet and windy day in Blackpool, although the Squires Gate pitch down there was apparently in excellent condition for the match.
With Manny Richardson pushed back into midfield, it was Ryan Bowman and James Reid upfront today, with under-16s player Josh Todd called up onto the bench. Playing with the wind at their backs in the first half the young Blues took the lead when a Matt Osmond lob over a stranded Blackpool goalkeeper bounced back off the crossbar, Reid though able to bundle home the rebound.
Ben McKenna then made it 2-0 when, at the back-post, he was able to finish off a deep free-kick into the box from Osmond. And it should really have been 3-0 to United at the break when the home goalkeeper lost possession of the ball in his own area only for Reid to somehow shoot off target from close range.
Playing with a strong wind now in their faces after the interval Carlisle defended well under good pressure from the Seasiders, and after boss Eric Kinder had introduced all three substitutes, including new boy Todd, the young Blues wrapped the game up two minutes from time. Bowman cutting inside a Blackpool player before producing a composed finish into the corner of the net to seal a third win in a row for United.
