Little happened in the opening 15 minutes of the game though, with a booking for Burnley's Nik Kudiersky being the only thing to note. United taking the lead on 20 minutes when Andy Cook initially fluffed a header from a left-wing Conor Tinnion cross. Simon Lakeland was on hand to knock the ball back in though and this time Cook buried an excellent header off the inside of the post past Burnley goalkeeper Danny McDonald.
Five minutes later and Cook turned provider for Carlisle's second goal, his neat pass through allowing Ryan Bowman to run on and stroke the ball low into the corner of the home net. Things taking a turn for the worse for United moments later though when left-back Matt Duffy had to be replaced by Steven Swinglehurst, Duffy leaving the field with a heavily strapped ankle.
The young Blues then making it an excellent 3-0 moments before the interval when Bowman rounded McDonald before slotting the ball home for his second goal of the game. Bowman and Jonny Blake then being the second and third Carlisle injury victims early in the second half, Bowman, with an ankle problem, substituted for the returning Chris McDougall, and Blake going off with concussion as John Seaton came on in his place.
Unsurprisingly given their efforts this season Burnley were a better side after the break, and following an earlier Chris Lynch shot that came back off the face of the United crossbar, Wes Fletcher, from a Chris Anderson pass, pulled a goal back for the Clarets after they had used all three substitutes in an effort to get back into the game.
Carlisle were able to see out the rest of the match in relative comfort though, Burnley's best chance of making it a nervy ending to the match coming in a late goalmouth scramble that the young Blues managed to survive. So today's cracking win means that three horses remain in the title race, Wrexham being the darker horse of the trio. As for United their next league game is at home to Tranmere next Saturday morning.
