The only goal of the game came early on with the Blues scoring in only the tenth minute. Striker Stephen Hindmarch touched on a long throw into the City box, and, as the Keswick-born youngster looked to turn and get a shot in on goal, the ball hit a Chester defender on the hand to gift Carlisle a penalty. Third-year YTS player Pete Ferris stroking the spot-kick home confidently to give the Cumbrians a 1-0 lead.

The Blues had a further penalty claim turned down in the second-half, which seemed more of a cast-iron award than the one given, when a shot by Ferris looked to be blatantly handballed by a Chester player. Schoolboy forms winger Mike Stewardson missed a good opportunity after the break to score for United when he failed to take a one-on-one opportunity against the City keeper.

A young side put out by United youth team boss David Wilkes held on to their one goal lead well though and defended resolutely throughout to seal the win. It was certainly a hard-fought game on a poor surface to play on however and Wilkes will have been pleased with the attitude shown by the players to recover from a 5-0 hammering at home to Stockport just four days earlier.
