The Stadium of Light outfit now face Manchester City over two legs in the semi-finals after the Citizens won 4-1 at Plymouth. The City goals being scored by Danny Sturridge (22), Ben Mee (37), David Ball (64) and Alex Nimely-Tchuimeni (84), before Argyle grabbed a late consolation goal through Jarred Stevens.
Port Vale, like Carlisle, play in the Youth Alliance North-West section and they too were defeated by a Premier League side, the Valiants going down 5-2 at home to Chelsea. Gael Kakuta, at the tender age of 16 scored a hat-trick for the visitors with the other goals for the Blues being grabbed by Morten Nielsen and Miroslav Stoch, while the Vale goals came from a Jonathan Crompton spot-kick and Danny Glover.
As we already know United lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa almost two weeks ago now, the goals for the Villains being scored by Harry Forrester and Barry Bannan from the penalty spot. One tag line being that the Premier League won the day in the quarter-finals as all four of their sides went through at the expense of the two Championship and League One sides.
