The first game played in round three produced what always looked a potential shock in a cracking tie, Preston, who are top of the North-West Youth Alliance League, defeating Manchester City 2-1 at home. The only third round shock of the eleven games played so far being Hartlepool defeating Sheffield United 2-1 at home, non-league Bury Town themselves hoping to cause a massive upset when they take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Wednesday evening.
As for Carlisle, well we of course take on Premier League side Stoke City at home on Tuesday evening in round three. Stoke currently sit in eighth of a ten team Premier League Academy Group C, the Potters having a record of four wins, five draws and three defeats from their twelve league games played so far this season. Despite that record though Stoke do have a negative goal difference having scored 15 goals and conceded 18 to date.
With being a Premier League club this is Stoke's first tie in the competition this season while Carlisle have reached round three after defeating two lower league sides. United first knocking out Accrington Stanley 9-8 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes at Brunton Park, before winning 2-1 at York in round two. And if the Blues can make it past the Potters on Tuesday evening then they will be involved in the fourth round draw this coming Friday lunchtime.
