Seven goals and seven different goalscorers showing the strength in depth in Carlisle's attacking football at the moment. Although that spread of goals will certainly be tested for the youngsters considering they have a small squad of 15 fit players and the league, League Cup, FA Youth Cup, Cumberland Cup, reserve league and Reserve League Cup to compete in this season in a ridiculously bloated programme.
Crewe, having won 4-2 at Stockport on penalties tonight in front of 236 spectators, the score being 2-2 at full-time and 3-3 after-extra-time, also won on the road in the opening stage of the competition as they tasted victory 2-0 at Bury. Their goals at the Shakers coming courtesy of Ben Marshall and Michal Jackson while against the Hatters Matt Lund, Daniel Shelley and Marshall again found the back of the net.
League-wise Crewe Alexandra have Academy status as a football club and so compete in Group C of the Premier Academy League. The Railwaymen currently seventh of ten teams with a record of four wins, three draws and five defeats from twelve games played. Crewe's opponents in the division being Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Bolton Wanderers.
So a tough tie obviously awaits the young Blues when their third round game is played, although the fact that Crewe could only draw against a Stockport side that is mid-table in our Youth Alliance division, while Carlisle are second, shows that it is not an impossible task for United. No date has obviously been set for the clash yet but it promises to be another enjoyable FA Youth Cup night at Brunton Park.
