Andrew Cook, who notched a brace in the 5-2 Puma Youth Alliance League Cup win over Chesterfield on Saturday got the scoring underway at Field Mill this evening in the 26th minute. A poor defensive header by Town's Eddie West seeing Cook pounce on the loose ball, round Town goalkeeper Luke Gibbons and fire a shot home into the back of the Stags net.
Gary Madine saw a shot hit the crossbar for the Blues in the 40th minute before in-form Cook doubled his and United's tally bang on half-time. Cook getting on the end of an excellent cross in from the right by Ged Dalton to thump a drive powerfully past Gibbons from 12 yards out.
The home side clawed their way back into the game after the break though when, in the 48th minute, skipper Warren's Burrell low deflected 22-yard shot flew beyond the reach of Cumbrians keeper Alex Mitchell. Carlisle midfielder Matthew Wood then leaving the field three minutes later, Wood unable to run off an injury he picked up in the first-half as he was replaced by Simon Lakeland.
United restored their two-goal advantage in the 56th minute when Cook held the ball up well following Matthew Brown's long throw into him. Cook then releasing a pass to his strike-partner Madine who thundered a shot into the back of the Mansfield net.
Carlisle putting the tie out of the reaches of the home side just eight minutes later when Cook, seven yards out, claimed his hat-trick after powering a header past Gibbons in the Town goal. Blues boss Eric Kinder making two changes before the final whistle, the former Blackburn coach bringing on John Seaton for Dalton and Michael Dowson for Blake.
The resounding victory for the Cumbrians means that they now face Sheffield Wednesday at Brunton Park in the third round on a date to be confirmed. The goals keep on coming upfront with Cook and Madine having scored 23 goals between them in 16 youth games this season, and the dangerous front pairing will be looking to add to that tally when they play their next game at home to Blackpool this coming Saturday in an 11am kick-off.
