Mark Gillespie was in goal for the Blues for this game and he was able to have a relatively easy time of it early on as numerous Motherwell efforts flew wide of the target. Carlisle having their best chance just after the half-hour mark when a well placed Connor Tinnion could only fire high and wide of the Steelmen's goal.
The home side should then have taken the lead shortly afterwards following a foul by Tom Aldred on trialist Chris McDougall that earned Motherwell a penalty. McLaughlin dusted himself down to take the spot-kick but he was only able to look on in disappointment as his effort pinged away off the right-hand post.
After the break it was much quieter fare with a good few substitutions apiece breaking up the rhythm of the game. An older Motherwell side again having the better of the play as Gillespie was forced to make a couple of good saves late on to keep his clean sheet intact.
In his short appearance for United Henderson seemingly made a good impact as he will be kept on trial next week for the pre-season friendlies against Barrow and Carlisle City. One player missing though, as he has been for a few weeks, will be second year midfielder Michael Dowson, who, after going on an unsuccessful trial spell at Hartlepool recently, has had the remainder of his contract cancelled by mutual consent.
