The match was played in physical fashion throughout, perhaps too physical at times as a weak referee allowed a little bit too much to go in the tackle. The Cumbrians took the lead ten minutes before the break when skipper Shaun Vipond curled a beauty of a free-kick in across goal and into the Rochdale net from 20 yards out. Matthew Wood also had a goal disallowed for the Blues when he was the subject of a marginal offside decision after finishing off a cross at the 'Dale far-post.
Second-year YTS striker Andy Hardman missed a couple of second-half chances for Carlisle, one of them being a lob into the opposition side-netting, before the home side equalised in controversial circumstances. A poor free-kick decision being given in favour of the 'Dale which they scored from to bring the scores back level at 1-1. Despite the late drama in the Cumbrians goal the United lads showed good team spirit and discipline to keep things going under pressure from the home side as they hung on for a point.
