Carlisle's youth team slipped to another disappointing reverse in the Youth Alliance League North West Conference as they went down 3-0 away to Shrewsbury Town.
With Connor Grant making his debut between the sticks due to the elevation to the first-team bench of Adam Bradley and illness sweeping through the squad it was always going to be a tough task for the young Blues to come back from Shropshire with a good result.
United's only real chance of the opening period came shortly before the home side took the lead in the 25th minute as Carlisle skipper Dan Kirkup was thwarted by a great save from Shrews keeper Ian Havard.
Shrewsbury took the lead quickly after that United chance through left-sided midfielder Dylan Williams. Winger Brad Morley crossed in from the right to the near-post where the ball was missed both by Carlisle glovesman Grant and Shrews striker Chris Morris. Williams was on-hand at the back-post though to head an easy finish home and put the Shropshire outfit one goal to the good.
Shortly after the interval and the home side made the score 2-0 after good play between Morris and fellow strike-partner Marcus Sharrad sent Morris racing clear to cooly slot underneath the advancing Grant.
Late in the second-half Shrewsbury put the result beyond any doubt with a nicely taken goal from under-16 winger Steve Allen who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes after replacing Morley down the right.
So, another tough day at the office for the Blues youngsters but they have no time to feel sorry for themselves as they have to regroup quickly to face the challenge of their biggest game of the season so far. That match comes on Tuesday night in a 7pm kick-off at Brunton Park as the lads face Huddersfield Town in the Fourth Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup.
