Just like 12 months ago the Blues started off their campaign with a match away to Everton. Last season Carlisle managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw after Jonny Blake had given them a first-half lead but this year a Ryan Bowman goal in the opening period was not enough to stop the Toffees from grabbing a victory thanks to two goals after the break.

Bowman's goal coming after he broke clear of the Everton back-line and chipped an excellent finish over the advancing home keeper. Shortly after half-time though and the Toffees levelled when Lee McArdle hit an inch-perfect strike over the top of Blues keeper Mark Gillespie and into the net from fully 45 yards out.

Everton claiming the goal that would prove to be the winner, as United began to tire, when a shot from Lewis Codling deflected off Carlisle's James Wood on it's way past a wrongfooted Gillespie. Still, an encouraging start for the young Blues, especially given the disjointed nature of the team at such an early stage of the season.

Onto the team news, and with Connor Tinnion away training with the first-team, two trialists featured in the game for United. One being Mark Beg, a left-winger from Glasgow, and the other being Mark Sloan, who, as a midfielder, played wide out on the right. With rolling substitutions in the second-half the starting elevens in each half chosen by Blues boss Eric Kinder being :

First-half

Ryan Bowman - Andy Cook

Liam Davison

Shaun Law - Jonny Blake - John Seaton

Matt Duffy - Adam Jukes - Tom Aldred - Simon Lakeland

Alex Mitchell

Second-half

Ryan Bowman - Andy Cook

Mark Beg - Jonny Blake - Liam Davison - Mark Sloan

Steven Swinglehurst - Matt Duffy - Tom Aldred - James Wood
