Carlisle's last pre-season friendly, ahead of Saturday morning's league kick-off at Gillford Park against Burnley, saw United send out a real mish-mash of a side to face a slightly older Kilmarnock outfit. The Blues fielding one professional, three second-year YTS's, four first-year YTS's, one under-16 and two trialists in their starting eleven.

With Saturday in mind skipper Tom Aldred, Connor Tinnion and Alex Mitchell had been rested, while Steven Swinglehurst was unavailable. The four substitutes used for the Cumbrians during the afternoon being one second-year YTS in Jonny Blake, Ryan Bowman a first-year YTS and two more trialists in Mark Sloan and the surname-less Simon who came on at right-back.

So, as you can imagine, that inexperienced line-up saw Kilmarnock as the better of the two sides in the first-half. Killie going close after 15 minutes with a 15-yard shot that pinged away off Gillespie's post, while Wordsworth was unable to shoot home from close range on the half-hour mark after the visiting keeper had flapped away at a Law corner in.

One of the Killie strikers wasted a good opportunity when he sliced a drive well wide five minutes later. Then shortly afterwards the visitors were screaming for a penalty that they didn't get after Wordsworth looked to have brought down their other frontman just inside the United box.

Surname-less Simon came on for Story straight after the break and sadly for him it was his mistake that led to the visitors bagging the opening goal of the game on 55 minutes. Surname-less Simon's weak header back to Gillespie allowing a Kilmarnock forward to get to the ball ahead of the United goalkeeper, round him, and then stick a shot into an empty net from 15 yards out.

Carlisle then made a couple more substitutions before equalising with 20 minutes to go after trialist Forster had seen a close-range header tipped expertedly wide by the visitors stopper. He wasn't to be denied though, and after the initial corner had been cleared, he was on-hand to thump a tremendous 12-yard right-footed half-volley on the turn low into the bottom corner when the ball came back in from the right.

Five minutes later and some would call it a scuffed shot from outside the box while others would say it was a pinpoint pass. Whichever way Blake's right boot saw the ball go straight to Davison 15 yards out in front of goal. Davison's instant control and shot limping into the net after hitting the body of Kilmarnock's substitute goalkeeper on it's way past him.

Carlisle were sometimes living life dangerously at the back as the visitors looked for an equaliser but United went close to grabbing another goal on 82 minutes. Duffy's cross from the left to the Killie back-post seeing Davison smash a fierce 12-yard volley back across goal which the visitors stopper did well to part-block, with a covering defender then hacking the ball away from the line in the last real action of the match.
