United Youth Begin FA Cup Campaign

Last updated : 31 October 2011 By Thetashkentterror

FA Youth CupLast Tuesday evening it was the first team defeating Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 at home and the youth team now have the chance to emulate that this week when they take on the Owls under-18 side in a 7pm kick-off. Carlisle facing a Wednesday outfit, managed by Sean McAuley that have Academy status and who currently sit in sixth place out of the teams in the FA Premier League Academy Group D with a record of won three, drawn two, lost five, scored 17 and conceded 22 from their ten games played so far.

United have of course played the Owls in the FA Youth Cup before when Gary Madine scored Carlisle's goal in a 1-1 Brunton Park draw, with the Blues going on to win through to round four after claiming victory 4-2 on penalties.Their next tie that 2007-08 season being the famous 2-1 away win against Manchester United before the Cumbrians eventually bowed out 2-0 at home in the quarter-finals against a strong Aston Villa side.

As for this FA Youth Cup campaign if Carlisle can get past Sheffield Wednesday once more then they will face Kidderminster Harriers or Brighouse Town on the road in round two, with those two teams playing their opening stage game on Wednesday night. Kidderminster, who are fifth at the moment in a 12 team Conference Youth League Central Division, lucky enough to have five home ties in a row so far, beating Nuneaton Griff 5-0, Stone Dominoes 3-2 and Matlock Town 3-0 before their match against Brighouse Town, and then potentially Carlisle United.

As for Brighouse, which is pretty much between Halifax and Huddersfield geographically, well they play their youth trade at a much lower level in the Northern under-19 Alliance League Western Division, Town currently second in an eight team league based around the West Yorkshire area. Brighouse, like Kidderminster, not needing penalties to win any of their qualifying ties having defeated Worksop 3-2 away before picking up successive home victories against Grimsby Town 3-2 in a shock result then Loughborough Dynamo 2-1.

First up for Carlisle though, in form with seven league wins out of their last eight games but without their top scorer Alex Salmon, is what will be a very tough test against a Sheffield Wednesday side who, like their senior counterparts have a reputation for being big and physical. The game itself versus the Owls, which could go to extra time or even penalties, kicking off at 7pm at Brunton Park on Tuesday night, admission to the main stand being £3 for adults and £1 for senior citizens and kids, with there also being live commentary of the match on United Player if you can't make it down to the game.
