Walsall Youth 2-1 United Youth

So, the 22nd of November and all that is left for Carlisle to play for in knockout competitions this season is the Cumberland Cup. It was always going to be a very hard task for the United youngsters to create a FA Youth Cup second round shock and win at Walsall though, the in-form Saddlers being top of the Puma Youth Alliance North West Conference Group B with only one league defeat from 11 games.

Shaun Vipond had the first opportunity for United after only four minutes when Stephen Hindmarch was fouled in the Saddlers box, but he was unable to convert the penalty given as he fired his spot-kick wide of Walsall keeper James McKeown's goal. The Saddlers then took the lead after nine minutes when Chris Hanna converted a cross into the Cumbrians box, Hanna bagging his brace and doubling the Walsall advantage on 31 minutes.

The Blues battled hard in the second-half to try and draw level but despite a heavy spell of pressure they only had Madine's goal just after the midway point in the half to show for their sterling efforts. Also to add insult to injury United left-back Matthew Blake was sent off for foul and abusive language at the referee after the final whistle had gone. The result means that Walsall now have a third round tie at home to Middlesbrough to look forward too while the young Blues have a chance to return to winning ways in a league fixture against Wigan Athletic at Frenchfields on Saturday morning.
