Last season, following a round one bye, United were knocked out 6-5 on penalties in round two following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes away to Preston North End. This year though the Blues have to start a round earlier when they face Bradford City at Rawdon Meadows, Apperley Bridge as the two sides hope to produce some fireworks on the morning of Saturday 5th November. The young Bantams finishing 8th of 13 teams in the north-east region of the youth league at the equivalent level Carlisle play at in the north-west.
Meanwhile, in their 2010-11 Youth Alliance Cup campaign City themselves were knocked out at the first round stage 2-1 away to Darlington, the surprise package non-league Quakers eventually making it all the way to the overall final before losing 4-2 in a penalty shootout at Wycombe Wanderers following a 0-0 draw over 90 minutes. Wanderers getting that far by virture of a different system in the south which sees teams start off in groups of three at the first hurdle of the competition.
