Walsall won the title last season and they started this campaign in similar fashion with a 2-0 home win over Macclesfield, runners-up Wigan also victorious on the opening day this year thanks to a single second-half strike at Bury.
As we know, Carlisle, third last year, lost 4-2 at home to Burnley, while Blackpool defeated perennial strugglers Accrington Stanley 2-0 at home. Fellow Lancastrians Preston North End meanwhile starting off their season with a 2-2 draw at home to Rochdale, Stockport against Tranmere also finishing honours even at 1-1.
In the mini-derby Chester lost 2-0 at Wrexham, Morecambe also getting underway with a defeat as they were thumped 5-0 at home to Oldham. Shrewsbury won hardly anything but the wooden spoon last season, but this year they began with a victory, defeating Port Vale 2-1 at home.
