After two blank weeks of freeze-outs the league finally got going again after its festive break this weekend. Unbeaten Burnley, who are now in third four points behind Carlisle but with three games in hand, still sat on the sidelines though as their match at Preston was postponed due to the sides playing each other in an identical Championship fixture at the same time.
Wrexham are now second, two points off United, after defeating Tranmere 2-0 at home, while in fourth come Oldham who could only manage a 1-1 draw at Bury. Port Vale are improving at the moment and they are fifth after a good 4-2 win at last season's title-winners Walsall, while completing the top six are Wigan who tasted victory 1-0 at Shrewsbury.
Into the mid-table and lower reaches and Stockport won 2-0 at home to a struggling Chester side, while Macclesfield were victorious on the road 2-0 at rock bottom Accrington. The way things are going Morecambe and Rochdale will be finishing their season in June as their game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, Morecambe now five matches behind the fixture list.
As we already know, Carlisle won 4-0 at home to Blackpool thanks to a brace of goals apiece from Ryan Bowman and Andy Cook, the lads taking a break from the league next week though when they visit Tranmere in the Northern Area League Cup Quarter-Finals.
Those were supposed to be the only games on next Saturday but some teams who have already been knocked out of the competition are understandably filling a blank date with postponed matches from earlier in the season. Wrexham at Walsall and Burnley at Rochdale in particular catching the eye from a United perspective.
