Youth Team League Weekend Update

United's Ryan Bowman
The game of the day obviously came at Burnley where Carlisle took on the unbeaten Clarets in a third v second clash. United putting in an excellent performance to win 3-1 and move back to the top of the table, the goals for the young Blues coming from Ryan Bowman (2) and Andy Cook, while Wes Fletcher netted for the home side.

Carlisle's weekend then getting even better with the news that Wrexham, who had been in top spot, dropped two points in a 2-2 draw at Port Vale. The current state of play in the three horse race seeing United first with 41 points from 16 games, the Red Dragons in second with 40 points from 17 matches and Burnley in third, the Clarets perhaps still in pole position though as they have 37 points on the board from only 14 games played.

Another potential fly in the ointment for Carlisle could be the fact that still have two fixtures left to play against a rapidly improving Preston outfit, North End winning big again at the weekend, this time 5-0 at Rochdale. Oldham having now dropped down to sixth after surprisingly losing 1-0 at home to Morecambe, that being only the second victory of the season for the young Shrimps.

Down into the mid-table reaches and last season's title winners Walsall had a good win on the road 3-1 at Tranmere, while Wigan lost 2-0 home to Stockport. Six of the bottom seven at the start of the day were in action against each other, Chester drawing 1-1 at home to Bury, Shrewsbury losing 1-0 at Macclesfield and Accrington just failing to claim only their second point of the season as they went down 1-0 at home to Blackpool.

Weather permitting this coming Saturday morning sees Carlisle face Tranmere at home while Wrexham have a tough fixture at Preston and Burnley, on paper, look to have three points in the bag with a match against lowly Shrewsbury at home. The Clarets also looking to have the softest run-in to the end of the season with a bumper eight games left at home and just five away.
