It was a bad weekend for United in the league as they lost 2-0 at home to Wigan and title rivals Wrexham and Burnley both won. The Red Dragons tasting victory 2-1 on the road at Morecambe while the Clarets defeated Tranmere 2-1 at home, those results keeping Wrexham at the top of the table, Carlisle in second and Burnley in third, although the Turf Moor outfit will be in pole position if they can make the most of a massive five games in hand on Wrexham.
Elsewhere in the division Port Vale remain in fourth despite losing 1-0 at lowly Rochdale, while Preston come next in the table, North End winning 2-0 at home to Macclesfield. In the mid-table reaches Walsall drew 2-2 at Bury and Oldham thumped an inconsistent Chester side 4-0 at home.
Down at the bottom end of the things Accrington Stanley won their first game of the season on Monday, 2-1 in a rearranged fixture at home to Morecambe, they couldn't repeat those heroics on Saturday though as Shrewsbury went home down the M6 with all three points on the back of a 1-0 win. Lastly things are going from bad to worse for third bottom Blackpool who were thrashed 6-0 at home to Stockport and have now conceded 56 goals in 19 matches.
Next weekend Carlisle have two home games in two days, and really given recent results they need to win both those matches to remain in the title race, even more so given that Burnley and Wrexham both play sides down at the bottom, Wrexham having had a particularly soft fixture list this season. Away from the division it's League Cup semi-final weekend with Morecambe and Tranmere still left flying the flag for the North-West Conference.
